Day 8 – BC Day

isn’t it nice.. my first week of work in Vancouver starts with British Columbia Day, a statutory holiday.  Not only will I have to adjust to a company where I’ll be working far fewer hours than I’ve become accustomed, but I get to start with a day off :)

Em and I scouted my bike commute to the office. 23 km, took 64 minutes. So it’s shorter than my Bako commute, but takes 15 minutes longer. The commute here will have far more cars, two more bridges, 10,000 fewer dairy cattle. and hills. quite a few hills..

Rolling from the house, I’ll first have to cross the Lion’s Gate Bridge, which is the west-most bridge connecting the City to North Van.

After crossing Lion’s Gate, I’ll have the choice of staying along the highway or adding a few km through Stanley Park.

Both routes lead to the currently controversial Burrard Bridge.  On July 13, one lane (of this six lane bridge) became a dedicated cycling lane, physically separated from automobiles by concrete barriers. One of the sidewalks is now designated for pedestrians, and the other sidewalk is designated for north-bound cyclists. Drivers have vehemently protested this astonishing assault on their right to drive in all three lanes…

40 minutes later, we reached our destination. Locked up tight on a holiday weekend…

We took the “longer” route home. Swinging through the UBC campus, and stopping at a beach to relax, enjoy a quick dip, and share some watermelon..

on the way home we completed another loop through Stanley Park

yes, life here has been pretty good (it hasn’t started raining yet)..

so good, that I fear I’m being assimilated..

bike with shifters (cross bike until I ss it next month), baggies, jersey without pockets…

and …
