After a late (doesn’t quite rhyme with lazy)start, we set off on our day of hipsterism. Although, we decided not to ride into downtown to Dagny’s (their coffee is good, their breakfast foods not so much), and the trip to the bastion of Bako hipsters may interfere with our afternoon plans
Instead, we played in the fog in southwest Bako suburbia, where we found a five lane stop sign standing testament to the downturn in development: gated community to the north, fields to the west, fields to the south…
Perhaps a little scary looking at the skid marks in four lanes that go nowhere. As the fog lifted, revealing bluebird skies and rising temperatures, Em expressed her hidden desire to progress to off-road fixie adventures. On this hill (STIL), we tried to keep up with a four year old, bombing the downhill on his fixie, known in the tyke world as a Big Wheel. He was unimpressed.
After winding through new streets, old streets, developed, undeveloped, our path toook us to familiar ground; the Great Kern River Bike Path (which, I’ve heard almost makes Bako livable) Then, it was a short spin the local bagel shop, where our inner hipsters were loosed on the unsuspecting public.
Bad coffee, breakfast sandwiches, followed by bagels and cream cheese (being hip made me hungry), an we were ready to roll, continuing our suburban assault on the CSUB campus; pointedly ignoring the No Bikes signs (why are there bike free zones on a university campus)..
Em showed off her prodigious fixie skills by riding a straight line
while I worked on one-handed track stands
We finished our hipster ride just in time for me to change the wheels (and chain) on the Rat Ride, load the bikes, and head out for a ride in the foothills with the SSFTA.
Carving a turn on Mr. Toads Wild Ride (the wall above Em is nearly vertical). That Walt handles soooooo well…
Riding a high berm… she is blurred, but the shadow and her huge smile is very sharp. As soon as she finished, she hiked the opposite hill to hit it again (and then again)
One of my favorite local trail features, still loads of fun with a fixed gear, but unable to use the momentum of the lean-in hill,I had difficulty riding the top of the berm
After three hours of suburban hipster riding and almost three hours of mountainbiking, these were well earned

Nice socks! They definitely add to the “hip” look.
they are some dope socks
