Yet again, I visited Whistler without a bike, but with Em’s broken elbow still on the mend, mountain biking was not a viable option. Instead, we traveled north for a day of hiking the Joffre Lake region in the Coast Mountain Range. A very nice option, with a little taste of everything weather-wise. The temps were probably in the 40s and 50s for most of the day, while the skies ranged from bluebird (almost) to cloudy. A little rain, more rain, a little snow, more rain, some snow, more rain, and then a lot of dry during the descent. It had been so long since I have seen rain that I’m amazed I recognized it instead of standing in the trail, looking up, slack-jawed, trying to catch drops on my tongue.
It wasn’t a long hike, maybe 6km to the upper lake, and a few kilometers further to Matier Glacier, with about 650 m of elevation gain, the last 200 were pretty steep. Unlike hikes in the Rockies, we didn’t have to worry about afternoon thunderstorms, so we enjoyed a very leisurely start to the day, and other than two tour buses, the parking lot was still pretty empty when we arrived (although the same can’t be said when we were leaving at the end of the day)
- Ingredients for planning a nice day.
- Lower Joffre Lake, less than 100m from the parking lot
- Middle Joffre Lake
- A bottle of wine from the SSWC was a tasty treat
- Looking towards Tszil Glacier; longing to throw a tent up there
- Emily points out a lateral moraine across the Upper Joffre Lake
- View of Upper Joffre from an outhouse
- The mist rolled in as we climbed from Upper Joffre toward Matier Glacier
- Looking down on Upper Joffre Lake
- Captured by Em’s camera
- A small field of flowers en route to the Matier Glacier
- The mist grew thicker as we climbed towards the Matier Glacier
- More flowers as we continued to climb
- Excitement at a snowfield below the base of the Matier Glacier
- All smiles at the toe of Matier Glacier
- Fleeting bluebird skies above the Matier Glacier
- Eschewing the bridge for a not-so-skinny crossing

Wow, what a beautiful place… strange seeing snow in the summer!
Wow, beautiful pictures!! Looks like you really know how to enjoy yourself, on or off the bike. Wine on the trail?? Classic.
Mother Bliss – They’re summer is a little shorter than summer in Idylwild. And it’s a glacier..
Jeni – Alcohol – it’s not just for mountainbiking anymore…
