all of the equipments here is of a larger scale than you can appreciate from coursework, or working at LANL, particularly in the labs..

We removed the tube bundle (constructed from Admiralty Brass) for inspection

which revealed that the tubes are in remarkably good shape with little scaling evident, a pressure test will be required to truly evaluate their integrity, and I am skeptical that brass tubing will suffice for our application.
The tube inlets showed a little corrosion/scaling, but for their age (placed in operation in 1949), not too bad..

The kettle is a two-pass exchanger, with straight tubes and a confined volume for the return..
