Trailside Maintenance

The bane of most mountainbikers, what do you do if something goes wrong with your bike while you are out enjoying some singletrack? If you get a flat, can you change the tube? Do you have the necessary tools? What if your chain breaks, or your derailleur hanger snaps? What can you do?

The Tuff Riders organized a free maintenance clinic at Caballo Bike and Ski to answer these questions, and a few more. I gave the instructional part of the clinic, and 15 people showed up to hear what I had to say. So, in all it was a good day for me, nothing like having a captive, eager audience, and the opportunity to talk for 90 minutes…

Judging form the response and comments of those that attended, The Tuffies and Caballo may put together a maintenance series through the winter, addressing various components and their adjustments, one evening a month. Of course, everything could be simplified if more people would just see the light and remove all shifting components from their bike.
